Richard the Artist
Richard is an artist whose medium is earth, rocks, water, and plants. He brings these materials
together in different combinations to bring excitement to a garden. Richard began
earth sculpture when he was still in highs school, now more than twenty years ago. When
he can get away from landscaping Richard works in ceramic and metal sculpture.
Studied and Worked in Japan
Richard has always been drawn to things Japanese. So when an opportunity came to learn
landscape techniques and Koi pond construction in Japan, Richard bought his plane ticket,
purchased a book on how to speak Japanese, and took off. Richard was welcomed by the City of
Kochi, Fresno's sister city in Japan. Here Richard lived and worked.
Each Landscape Distinctly "Richard"
Richard reserves the right to create his own landscapes. He never installs a landscape plan
drawn by an architect. That is simply creativity-on-paper at best. Real creativity happens on
site. As a project develops it calls for creativity unique to that very spot of earth.
Artist on Site
A sculptor cannot send a crew to carve a granite block and expect a work of art. No, the
sculptor has to do it himself. So also in landscaping. Richard does not paint some lines on
the earth and leave his crew to do the job. Richard has to be on site with his crew.
Only a Chosen Few
Richard is equipped with trucks and tractors to move earth and boulders as efficiently as
possible. But a landscape always has to be finished with handwork. Landscaping projects average
two months. Koi pond installation requires at least two weeks. This limits Richard to 4 or
5 landscapes and 6 to 8 Koi ponds per year.
Service Area
Richard is limited to California's San Francisco Bay communities, San Jose, the Livermore
Valley and the Mount Diablo watershed. Richard also serves Fresno.
